The Müllembourg Nature Reserve is a true haven of peace for many species of birds during the winter: small waders, ducks, and many others find it an ideal place to spend the winter.

The Sébastopol polder, located in Barbâtre, is another must-see site on the island. This stretch of land, which lies below sea level, offers an extraordinary landscape that attracts many birdwatchers.

There are many activities to enjoy on the island: sailing, tours of the salt marshes, visits to an aquarium, a water park, or traditional villages… Not to mention beachcombing and the stunning fine-sand beaches in the north of the island, which are perfect for fully enjoying the coastline.

Noirmoutier Island is also known for its salt marshes, which give it a unique atmosphere. You can visit them throughout the summer and into early fall. There, you’ll have the chance to chat with local producers and learn about traditional salt-harvesting techniques.

Noirmoutier: A Taste of the Open Sea

With its long stretches of fine sandy beaches and small, sheltered coves, Noirmoutier has plenty of surprises in store for you. At Bois de la Chaize, in the north of the island, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Bourgneuf Bay.

To the south, Herbaudière Beach offers the chance to admire stunning sunsets at the foot of the dunes. And if you still have a little time, be sure to take a detour to the marina and fishing port. It’s a walk well worth taking!

How do I get there?

You can reach the island via the Passage du Gois, a submerged road connecting the mainland to Noirmoutier that is accessible only at low tide. We recommend checking the tide schedules before traveling this route. If conditions do not permit, you can also reach the island via the Noirmoutier Bridge.
