La Roche-sur-Yon
While the Vendée is one of France’s most popular tourist destinations, it owes this status to the quality of its beaches, the beauty of its landscapes, the famous Puy du Fou theme park, and the Vendée Globe.
Yet the Vendée is full of hidden gems. La Roche-sur-Yon, the department’s prefecture, is well worth a visit, for example. Starting in 1804, under Napoleon’s leadership, the city expanded and became known for its unique urban design. It adopted a pentagonal layout, organized in a grid pattern, centered around neoclassical buildings.
What to see and do in La Roche-sur-Yon?
We invite you to visit the Vendée Stud Farm. Located in the heart of the city, this iconic site offers you the chance to explore the grounds, learn about the various professions at the stud farm (coachman, saddler, groom, etc.), and attend shows during the summer.
Next, take a stroll around Place Napoléon and discover its surprising mechanical menagerie, known as the Animaux de la Place. This original creation is the brainchild of François Delarozière, founder of the Nantes-based company La Machine.
